Introduce Yourself!

During our current KAL/CAL, you'll be working on a scarf a little bit every day for the whole year. At the end, look back and see how the weather has changed!

My husband and I live in the apartment at my grandpa's house and over the last year he has become unable to drive due to Alzheimer's......

Wow, that's a lot of responsibility helping to take care of your grandpa.
My mother stays home with my step-dad, who has Alzheimer's, so I know what you're dealing with.

I have chosen colors to include those in my scarf. I chose white for snow, dark grey for tornados, and a tweed like for thunderstorms.

I'm using white for snow, grey for rain/fog, and black for lightning/thunderstorms.

I will be making a granny square afghan. The 1st round with the temperature color and the 2nd round in white and join the squares as I go along. I will have 20 squares per row and 20 rows. I figured 365 days, 3 white squares between the months and one white square at the beginning and end of the afghan. That will be a total of 400 squares. Depending on the left over yarn colors will determine how I'll make my border. My husband never heard of CAL/KAL's before and thought this was a great idea too. He will help me by looking up and listing the daily temperature on a spread sheet for me!

Welcome! Your granny square afghan sounds so neat! Can't wait to see photos.

Hi everyone! My name's Aimee & my husband would say I'm a yarnaholic. Every time a box comes to our porch, he assumes it's just another box of yarn...which, ok, he's probably right most of the time.

I decided to make mine an afghan. I'm not sure how I'm going to do it. In theory, I could do 3 separate ones-1 for the high temps, 1 for the low temps & 1 for the mean temps. I even thought about doing one for each of the seasons or even one for each month. lol.

I live in Southern CA. Most of the time the weather here is pretty boring...sun, sun & just when I think I can't take it anymore...more sun! Oh and the lovely heat waves that come with my kryptonite...Santa Ana winds. Just thinking about it makes my eyes water & my nose itch.

So, for my afghan, I was thinking about doing it from my birth year & where I was born...Lompoc, CA. It's a couple hrs north of here, so I figure maybe I'll get more degree variation from there?

I just ordered the yarn yesterday morning. I'll be using Vickie Howell's Sheep(ish).

Hello, Christine from Michigan...with our crazy weather of late, I chose to do a Mason, Michigan based theme!!! I am choosing to do January 2013, and then February-December 2012 temps. I am so excited!!! I am using Vickie Howell yarn Sheep-ish in the thermometer colors displayed on the blog page. I added a hot pink before the red so the red would be 100 degrees because we reach it occasionally!!! Hope everyone is having the time of their knit and crochet lives!!! :-)

My name is Pat Meyer. I am a retired business librarian. I like the idea of the scarf, but plan on using last year's temperatures, so I can get it done sooner. I am also considering using sock yarn, to make it shorter. My calculations for doing it as designed suggest that it will be between 11 and 12 feet long. Long scarves are nice, but that is too long. Using sock yarn, I expect to get a 7 to 8 foot long scarf. Right now, I am trying to figure out the temperature ranges I will use for the colors, my temperature range is 22 to 101 degrees, but there is only one day over 100, so that needs to be combined with the 90's temperatures. Also there are very few in the 20's. I am concerned about the amount of yarn in each color, and whether or not I should get a second skein of some yarns.
Knitting for others makes the world a better place.

Hi,
I'm Robin. I live in San Mateo, CA - about half way between San Francisco and San Jose. This also is my first CAL. I decided to go with the highs and have split my temperature range in 5 degree intervals with 55 and below the lower limit and 81 and up at the high end. I decided to go back and start it on Jan. 1, as we had some record lows here that I wanted to document. The pattern suggested actually crochets up pretty quick and I am almost caught up to today, having just started it on Sunday! Next year I may try an afghan using granny squares with the low temp in the middle of the square and the high temp for the outside row(s) of the square. Maybe even include the average for the day between the middle and outer rows.

Hi, I am Elaine and live in New Zealand. A friend from the state of New York gave me this site so that I could knit hats like hers. I so enjoyed Knitting the Mystery blanket last year and know that I will enjoy knitting the scarf. Our climate is moderate so will workout a colour and temperature chart to suit where I live.
Our temperature is given in celsius so our temperature today is 30c which is about 78f
