Yarn and Colors for Your Temperature Scarf!

During our current KAL/CAL, you'll be working on a scarf a little bit every day for the whole year. At the end, look back and see how the weather has changed!

Dmack wrote:...I think I have decided on the colors. I asked my best friend what her 2nd fave color is (other then black) and she said red/merlot (which I should have known because that was the color of our dresses for her wedding!) So I am going with a fingering weight yarn from dark merlot to a light blush.... The grey beads will go awesome with that!! I am so excited...I can't wait to start this!!

Wow! Now I'm jealous! That sounds like it will be incredible! I had considered going with one colour, different shades, but I didn't know where I could find 10 different shades of 1 colour in the same yarn, and I wanted to save money lol

I can't wait to see pics of yours!

Received my bernat satin yarn today. I pulled the centers out and rewrapped them for center pull and pushed it back inside the ball except for one that I pulled out a whole lot of center. That one is next to the main ball. The colors are the ones for the sample thermometer on the blog just different temperature ranges.

Here is a picture of my colors:

I'm using worsted weight yarn from my stash, so I don't have labels for everything. I live in Roseville, MN, a suburb of St. Paul, and I needed more of a break up of the cold range or I'd only have one color! Here is my chart:
Below 0=lavender
0-12=dk purple
13-22=royal blue
23-32=light blue
33-43=teal
44-53=kelly green
54-66=dk or forest green
67-77=gold
78-88=bright yellow
89-99=bright red
99 + above = maroon

I liked the idea of adding for snow and rain, so I use ecru for snow and knit two of the main color and purl two for snow. For rain I use aqua, thunderstorms will be navy blue, hail will be pink, sleet will be grey and tornado warning will be orange. For lighter snow and rain I am putting more stitches of the main color between the ecru or aqua.

I have attached a picture of my progress to date.

My yarn arrived today for my CAL/KAL scarf! Love the colors & plan on using different stitches for the both scarves that I want to make, 1 for my sister & 1 for myself. :bravo:

I ordered the yarn last night - now just have to wait.
Not the original colors that I thought I was going to use but some colors were out of stock so a couple of the colors picked themselves by what was available.

90 and above mocha
89 to 99 bordeaux
78 to 88 tangerine
67 to 77 amber
54 to 66 fern
44 to 53 soft fern
33 to 43 cobalt
23 to 32 sapphire
12 to 22 stardust
below 12 sultana

I plan on making an afghan so have a spreadsheet starting January 1st - so far the month of January has 4 colors. Now just need my yarn so I can start.

Yay, got shipping confirmation today for my Bernat Handicrafter Crochet Thread! It would totally make my week if I got it by Saturday (wishful thinking). :cloud9:

Tonight, I printed the high/low temps for this month, and created an Excel spreadsheet with colorfilled cells using Microsoft colors close to the colors of my yarn. I also did a test run of colors for the months of May, July, and October based on last years temps. Hopefully, this years temps will be close to last years (most likely will, seasons are seasons) because I must say, this shawl is gonna be mah-velous! :inlove:

Am rethinking my stitch from a diagonal slip stitch to a plain garter.

Here's my color/temp chart by degrees:
Edge - white/black held together (I won't be doing a row to split months)
20 - 24 Buttercup
25 - 29 Orchid
30 - 34 Vivid Violet
35 - 39 Misty Gray
40 - 44 Really Royal
45 - 49 Loyal Blue
50 - 54 Sky Blue
55 - 59 Still Water
60 - 64 Crisp Linen
65 - 69 Warm Tan
70 - 74 Dark Mocha
75 - 79 Evergreen
80 - 84 Ripe Avocado
85 - 89 Fresh Fern
90 - 94 Gentle Pink
95 - 99 Rosy Rose
100 - 104 Robust Red
105+ Perfect Red

Hi I did the blanket last year which turned out OK - so I'm back for more.. :hellogoodbye:
I'm in the UK so my yarn is James C Brett Top Value DK.
The temperature in the UK is fairly constant (rain lol) so it will probably end up being mostly blue
I'm going to take the temp on each day at midday with the smartphone.
Just saying ; it's about 3 degrees C today with snow on the ground brrr
32 degrees C was as hot as it got last year and that's a record and minus 2 was the coldest.
Remember that 1 degree F is about -17 degrees C, and 1°C = 33°F roughly
