Introduce Yourself!

During our current KAL/CAL, you'll be working on a scarf a little bit every day for the whole year. At the end, look back and see how the weather has changed!

Hi my name is LeAnn from Arkansas. I have been crocheting since I was 6. This will be my first CAL. I have so many ideas from reading what everyone has posted. I think I will do mine as blankets one for each of my three boys first years and one for my husband and mine first year married. I love all the ideas and can't wait to see what everyone does

Hi! I'm Carol, also known as dragondrummer on Ravelry. I plan to do the Temperature Scarf Knit-Along based on San Antonio, TX temperatures starting Jan. 1, 2012. Will do two rows for each day, one for the low temperature and one for the high temperature. May be a struggle at first as I'm already doing three KALS/CALS and I'll have to go back to the beginning of the year and get the temps from then. Think I may also add a row for things like rain, sunny, frost, etc. Though most of our days are sunny, it will be interesting to see how many cloudy, rainy days we have. :reading: :geek:

Hello, I'm Donna, and live in Central Virginia, where we have a WIDE range of temperatures. These temperatures vary greatly, even in January. For example, last week we had temperatures in the high 60's and up to 75, but this week the temps have ranged from 25 to 13 degrees, as it is this morning. Brrrrr!

I have never belonged to a forum before now, so am a tad shy about what to say. I a naturally shy person anyway, so you may not hear much from me.

I am hoping to start with this temperature scarf, as it sound so intriguing, and beautiful. The last knitting project that I started was about 20 years ago, a gorgeous "Falling Leaves" afghan. I was about a third of the way into it when I thought I'd made a mistake. I took it with me to Florida, where I was visiting my Mom and Dad, and I knew we'd be going to my Dad's sister's home, and she's an EXPERT knitter and everything else she tried. I thought I'd get her to look at it and help me "fix" the mistake. She did quickly look at it, and said she didn't see anything wrong with it, and for me to just continue on. Well, short story long, I never did continue, as I still felt there was a mistake. It sits in my living room in my knitting bag, still on the circular needles.

A scarf sounds like it would be a project made more for someone like me ... something that I can finish rather quickly. From a teenager until in my 30's I knitted mittens and hats for my sons and myself. They went so quickly that I had time to try other things. But, those other things turned out to be play basketball with my boys, then learn how to live without a husband, and learn how to take care of two sons, one just barely a teen and the other 15. Their Daddy, my husband, died from Melanoma. I began to retreat within myself, and wouldn't let anyone else in. When it got to the point that I would awake at 2 a.m. and not get back to sleep, was when I started on my first afghan - the one that's still not completed.

I have since learned (and now forgotten) how to crochet, and made about 5 granny square afghans.

I have become disabled with COPD. I had to leave my job in 2003 because I could not stay awake for 8 hours a day. I have since (starting last May) gone to the UVa Lung Transplant Center to "try out" for a lung transplant. That has kept me extremely busy since. One last test (a Colonoscopy at the end of next week) will give me the results of whether or not I will be listed. I have all the faith that I will be, but I know that is up to God.

OK, hows that for an intro?1? I certainly didn't intend for it to be this long, and I probably lost most of you after the first paragraph. I am happy that I found this forum, and I pray that I can accomplish something by following what happens here.

With all sincere intent,
Donnawb

first kal for me

Postby thehelloknitty » Fri Jan 25, 2013 3:36 pm

I am new to kal projects tending to work long hours and alone. I am a graduate student and thought this would be a fun project. I made a classic Tom Baker Doctor Who scarf so I am good with l-o-n-g scarf projects. I live in north Georgia so I am still working out my color and temp adjustments. I am also looking up temps for the year to start from the start (ha ha). I teach knitting but have only been knitting for I think about 8 years. I do my own patterns as well. I usually look for projects at Ravelry and an endless supply of knitting books I'm obsessed with. Looking forward to getting started with this project.

Introduce Yourself!

Postby Myfanwy » Fri Jan 25, 2013 5:34 pm

Hi - my name is Kathy, I live in Southampton in the UK and I help run a knitting group at our local library. I think the temperature scarf is a brilliant idea. I have just ordered some Bernat Satin yarn which will probably take some time to get to me, so I will have a lot of catching up to do. I've found the perfect weather website to give me the daily temperatures for Southampton and I've already looked at the average temperatures for 2012.
We don't get a lot of warm weather in the UK so in order for me to use as many different colours as possible, I've divided the temperatures into blocks of 10 degrees (centigrade). This has given me 7 different colours including a different colour for the border.
I can't wait to get started and show the scarf to my fellow knitters. I may even be able to persuade some of the ladies to take part but they will probably use an equivalent UK yarn. I will keep you posted.

Was so excited and focused on yarn colors forgot to introduce myself. I've been on here last year when this forum did the mystery afghan which was also fun. I live in Pennsylvania born and raised. I've always been very good with my hands. Remember my great grandmother told me I have great dexterity. Anybody who had a craft project crawled up right beside them and watched and some would teach me. I met my best friend in high school who taught me how to crochet. Don't you know I flung that thing across the room. I tried again later on and it became a second nature to me and I fell in love.

So glad to be on here doing a TEMPERATURE AFGHAN. Oh my!!!!!!! Love the idea. I'm using the monthly birthstones for mine staring with January garnet being the border

My husbands is going to be a granny aghan will be when he is on his business trips, the middle starting January garnet, green was the temperature in Dallas Texas and the rows are how many days he's there.

Hi, I'm in Oklahoma. Hoping to do this scarf from my stash mostly, so this could get interesting. I like greens and purples, so I might use several of those shades mixed with some white (snow or ice), gray (cloudy or rain), and cream (sunshine). In other words, I will use 2strands together. I'd better use fine yarns!

My name is Angela. I will be knitting the scarf based on the temperatures for Fishers, IN. I am a preschool teacher in Indianapolis.
I am also going back to January 1 to make this a 2013 scarf. I am using accuweather.com to get the temperatures. My son may also make one - since he lives with me and his would therefore be identical, he is thinking of using the low temperature rather than the high (interesting idea, son).
I am looking forward to seeing photos of completed scarves at the end of the year.
Good luck everyone! :D

]I have changed my mind... I am going to use up my stash as it is overwhelming me at the moment! I made a total of 10 afghans last year for my family' for Christmas (1 was for me and 1 was for a Breast Cancer charity auction) so I have a lot of different colors and stash to use up. My daughter, who I taught to crochet just this last year is going to do one also, she wants hers to match the colors in her room... thank goodness I have enough stash for hers too!

I separated my temps out in 5 degree increments except for the 30's, rare for the high to below 40 around here! I have already got caught up to today's date. :) My daughter and I love it's going to be a Dr Who length scarf

I am now working on another afghan for a dear friend who just found out she has cervical cancer that has gotten into her lungs also. It is being done in Teal and white, colors of cervical cancer awareness, so this scarf will be good short break while working on that!
