Tonight, I printed the high/low temps for this month, and created an Excel spreadsheet with colorfilled cells using Microsoft colors close to the colors of my yarn. I then did a test run of colors for the months of May, July, and October based on last years temps. Hopefully, this years temps will be close to last years (most likely will, seasons are seasons) because I must say, this shawl is gonna be mah-velous!

I am so jealous! Now, I wish I had chosen that yarn. Your shawl IS going to be beautiful.

I asked my best friend what her 2nd fave color is (other then black) and she said red/merlot (which I should have known because that was the color of our dresses for her wedding!) So I am going with a fingering weight yarn from dark merlot to a light blush.... The grey beads will go awesome with that!! I am so excited...I can't wait to start this!!

Wow! Now I'm jealous! That sounds like it will be incredible! I had considered going with one colour, different shades, but I didn't know where I could find 10 different shades of 1 colour in the same yarn, and I wanted to save money lol

I can't wait to see pics of yours!

Thanks Red! I am using knit picks palette yarn there are so many colors to choose from! I have been dying to use that yarn in a project and thought this one would be just perfect for it! I am all for saving money....and I have a gift certificate to Michaels, but I couldn't find the right combo of colors to use....now I get to spend the gift certificate on framing there! LOL.

I am waiting for them to arrive....as soon as I get started I will be sure to post a pic! I am jumping up and down in my seat!!

I found out about this scarf yesterday and spent all of today planning it! Im from connecticut so we get a wide range of temperatures, I based them on what I like!!! I am going to start from the beginning of January 2013 and I can't wait to get started. I'm ordering my yarn tonight! My colors are going to be Bernat Satin and for the weather I found this RedHeart Crochet Thread Fashion 5, I love the sparkly colors and should add some pizzazz to my scarf!! I AM SO EXCITED FOR MY FIRST KAL!!!! :D

I hate to even post this while so many are having this awful Arctic blast, but our January here in Houston has been so mild that I'm wondering now if I should add a couple more colors and break the 60's and 70's down into 5° intervals (I had already broken down the 80's and 90's in my initial planning). I wish I knew what February and next November/December had in store for us - but I guess that would ruin the whole element of surprise! LOL

Oh, I got geekishly excited earlier this weekend when I thought about the fact that I'm going on a cruise to Alaska in June. I'm totally going to use the highs for each day in Alaska that week and have a bit of a break from the hot summer stretch of Crimson and Goldenrod!

Unlike you in Houston, it has been colder then normal here in Nor Cal (not that I should be complaining, because it is STILL warmer then elsewhere, right? )
I love how you are going to use the temps in AK when you are on your cruise.....that really represents the year very accurately....hhhmmmm I am thinking of stealing that idea....

here in nor cal we get a pretty big range when taking into consideration the highs and lows (everything from the 30's to 90's (maybe 101 on a REALLY hot day). Because this KAL/CAL allows for much creativity and deciding what works best for you - here is what I did. I decided to use the high temps only (looked up last years to get a range), decided how many colors I wanted to use and then divided by that number (range was 48-98, and I am using 9 colors) so it ended up breaking down to 53 and below (which is really a range of 48-53), 54-59, 60-65, 66-71 so on and so forth.... I did it this way, because I was to break it down on my own it would have been 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69 and I felt that would have been just very predictable since the range is not super varied.

Hope that helps you out a bit!

Right now I have eight colors, and my range is very much like the one you avoided. I also am only considering the high each day, and I start at "49° and below" and go up to "95°+." I left the 50's, 60's, and 70's in tens and then split the 80's and 90's into fives. My biggest problem is that I'm not good at picking colors and improvising, so I went with the suggested colors and then just altered the scale a bit. The idea of picking more colors to go in it makes me nervous! LOL

I went out and bought all the yarn I'll need for this project today. It's mostly Lion Brand's Vanna's Choice selection of yarn. They were on sale and a I had 15% coupon for the transaction. If I bought Bernat, it would have been double the price. I'm going to be doing this in blues, greens, and yellows of the average daily temperatures. The gauges are based off of what a scarf would look like based off of last year's average daily temperatures. Living in Arkansas, the weather likes to be finicky with drastic changes. This month alone has been a constant change of below freezing to the mid 60's; meaning the summer will be up in the 100's again.

I've decided that I'm going to be following the main crochet pattern but I'll be changing it. I'll be doing one row of color per day and I'll be adding on 4 rows of my dark blue to the beginning and end of the scarf, not between the months. I also found that 4 crocheted rows following the pattern equals 1 inch for me.

4 rows = 1 inch
365 days x 2 rows = 730 rows / 4 = 182.5 inches / 12 inches = 15.21 feet
Border color at the ends and between the months adds about 13 inches = 16.3 feet

4 rows = 1 inch
365 days / 4 rows = 91.25 inches / 12 inches = 7.6 feet + 2 inches (border color at ends) = 7.8 feet
(this seems far more reasonable)
