I love how you are going to use the temps in AK when you are on your cruise.....that really represents the year very accurately....hhhmmmm I am thinking of stealing that idea....
here in nor cal we get a pretty big range when taking into consideration the highs and lows (everything from the 30's to 90's (maybe 101 on a REALLY hot day). Because this KAL/CAL allows for much creativity and deciding what works best for you - here is what I did. I decided to use the high temps only (looked up last years to get a range), decided how many colors I wanted to use and then divided by that number (range was 48-98, and I am using 9 colors) so it ended up breaking down to 53 and below (which is really a range of 48-53), 54-59, 60-65, 66-71 so on and so forth.... I did it this way, because I was to break it down on my own it would have been 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69 and I felt that would have been just very predictable since the range is not super varied.
Hope that helps you out a bit!

Right now I have eight colors, and my range is very much like the one you avoided. I also am only considering the high each day, and I start at "49° and below" and go up to "95°+." I left the 50's, 60's, and 70's in tens and then split the 80's and 90's into fives. My biggest problem is that I'm not good at picking colors and improvising, so I went with the suggested colors and then just altered the scale a bit. The idea of picking more colors to go in it makes me nervous! LOL

The colors are so vibrant and very soft. I may shift the order of my colors a bit, turns out the Buttercup is very pretty (not at all like the green/yellow online) and I had it designated for 24 degrees and below, which means it would hardly be seen.
This shawl is going to be lovely. Now gotta go swatch, I bought needles last night. Tomorrow's the big day.
