Discussion and Photos of our Works in Progress (Jan. & Feb.)

During our current KAL/CAL, you'll be working on a scarf a little bit every day for the whole year. At the end, look back and see how the weather has changed!

I am crocheting a granny square temperature afghan! I will be making a granny square each day, the first round in the high temp of the day and the second round in white. I figured 365 days, 3 white squares between the months an one white square at the begining and end of the afghan. That will be a total of 400 squares. I will have 20 squares per row, and 20 rows total. Will figure out the border when know how much yarn I'll have left over from the temperature colors. I made an excel spread sheet listing the dates and white squares. I'll try to post it for you.

Thanks for the information, GrannySquare41390. Your chart would be so helpful. What size are your squares coming out (i.e. 4")?

One month down. This looks like a sky scarf, but it will turn into a sky-ghan. 72" long. January is 3.5", which includes a row of dark blue to mark the month end. The separate row at month end is a great idea to tie the work together. That works out to 42" wide when finished, and then a border.

GrannySquare41390 - I love your granny square afghan so far. The outside round of white is a great idea.

Crochetfanatic - Can you upload a photo of your squares so far?

Well, all of the January stripes are now complete. I'm doing the average daily temperature and crocheting only one row a day. I'm using blues for low temps, greens for mid temps, and yellows for higher temps. We can already see what crazy jumps we've had so far for this month.

I really like your granny square layout! You have done all the design work for us! I'm not that much of a scarf person, but blankets are right up my alley, so I would use this idea.....if I do this project. Mine would be quite colorful with our lowest temps here being in the teens and then over 100 for many days during the summer.....something like 40 or so last year! I still haven't committed to it yet....... :hrmm: :idonno:

I wanted to do January but couldn't find the temperatures for our area, so waited until today to start I will post a pic in about 2 weeks.
It is in the 30sC today that would be in the 80sF so will be using red yarn to start.

I hate to burst your bubble, Laynie.....but today is the last day in January; February starts tomorrow! :)

No you haven't burst my bubble ,I live in New Zealand and am almost a day ahead of you. :hellogoodbye:

Ah! One place that I would love to be able to visit some day!! Isn't this also your summer months at this time of year? :hellogoodbye:

i have a question. February border is purple for the amethyst birthstone, today the temperature is in the purple, how can I distinguish the two. I think it's suppose to snow today , could wait until this afternoon, if not not sure what to do

I just finished january 2013 for battle creek, Michigan. Here is a picture of it. The scarf for January is 17 inches including border. For the year it will be approximately 17 feet long if I calculated correctly. That is one long scarf!

Oh, I wish you could find January temps for New Zealand!

Your temps are as varied as mine! This sure was a crazy January, wasn't it?

Maybe you could start with a row of white to designate the snow.

Coolmom, I love those colors!

And you mentioned that the orange is not the same thickness. This happens sometimes with different colors of the same yarn. I think the dye affects some yarns, and changes their thickness a bit.
