In order to have a somewhat manageable scarf, I cast on 39 stitches with a 4.5 mm needle (which with my tight gauge is equivalent to a 4 mm needle). Based on January, it should be about 80 inches long.
We had some pretty varied temperatures this month, with highs up to 60 F (light green) and down to 11 F (dark, sparkly purple).

I am working on both a scarf and a lapghan for this. I am using light weight yarn for the scarf which is the low temperatures and Bernat Satin for the lapghan which if sor the high temperatures.. This is January.

Done with January - Went with US size 7 needles and got about 9" so far - so that's about a 10' scarf - not too bad. And yes that's a 66 degree day at the end of Jan. grumble grumble!

Here's my first rows. Ridiculously wonderful feeling of accomplishment getting these done.

I only did three out of the four border rows before starting, as I want to join January on and I'm thinking it'll be more discreet in black.

Today was 7C here.

Sonoma, I've done nothing so far because I'm still completely perplexed with how big to make my squares and how to lay them out. I even had my husband working on it, and after realizing that his plan wasn't going to work, he threw up his hands and said he didn't know how to do it either.

Oh, I love the look of your scarf! And 80 inches will be a great length.

What size are the squares that GrannySquare41390 has ended up with? They seem quite small. I'll have to think about the options for laying out a granny square afghan.

I don't know, but I started my own Excel sheet and came up with a 20 by 24 block grid with each block at about 4". I'll put two decorative blocks in front of each row, 16 days, two more decorative blocks to finish out the row, and then continue on the next row to finish out the month. I figured I'd start January with a snowflake, but I didn't figure out yet how I'm going to do that.

I don't know how it would look but you coul "snake" your days for the granny square blankets? Like start from the bottom of one row and when you start your next row doing so beside your last square instead of beside yiur first one? I'm debating do something similar once I get caught up on some other projects.
