pompom beanie

I am knitting the bernat pompom beanie for my granddaughter.Has anyone else had any problems with this pattern?I am now shaping the top and on the 7th row I end up with 17 stitches instead of 16sts.I like the softee chunky but it is difficult to knit with ,I think my tension is to tight especially when shaping the hat. I have already frogged it once and restitched the 7th row but I still come up with 17 stitch. Is it me or the pattern instructions. I am knitting the hat to fit a 6/8 yrs. Thanks for any help. Did you have the correct number of stitches at the end of the other decrease rows? I haven't knit it but it does look like the pattern is correct. Are you starting the row by Knitting 2 tog and then Knitting 1?
