Discussion and Photos of our Works in Progress (Jan. & Feb.)

During our current KAL/CAL, you'll be working on a scarf a little bit every day for the whole year. At the end, look back and see how the weather has changed!

I'm making an afghan with the inner circle representing the low and the second round representing the high. I've gotten the lows about up to date and about 2 weeks of the second round. Any sage advice about finishing the 3rd round and attaching as I go along?
I love seeing everyone's progress!
Thanks, Monica

Hi Monica! I'm making squares too. I've been trying to figure out to do it since I first saw the CAL announced, and I think I finally got my idea down pat. I just started last night. I don't have a picture yet.

I'm joining my squares the way I learned to join granny squares in a red heart crochet granny pattern. I'm not good at explaining things like this, but I'll try. I make my last round on square one by skipping one more stiches on the previous round in the last round putting chains in their place about every other stitch. Then on the next square I join in that round by slip stitching in the corners and putting a single crochet in each space on the other square. Sorry, it's very easy to do and very hard to explain. Hopefully I'll have a picture soon.

**edit**
I took a photo of the 3 blocks of my afghan I have done so far. I just found out that the photo editing program I've used since the 90's doesn't work in my new computer, so I had to just use the photo straight from my camera. I hope it isn't too big.

This is the first two "non day" blocks and the first day of January. My cat, Tawny, is helpfully holding it for me.

Finally started my calendar afghan for 2012 in Williamsburg Va. :cloud9: After 8 blocks I thought I should rethink its size. If I continue it will be 12.5 feet by 13.5 feet. Now to restart making smaller squares.

Love that ribbing! :D

milkdonormama wrote:Is anyone crocheting? If so, what stitch are you using and how long is your scarf thru January? I've got my yarn but haven't started yet. I'm trying to decide what I want to do. I was thinking of making four wide scarves and sewing them together into an afghan for my baby who was born on 12/24/12.

Congratulations on that baby! I think your afghan idea is awesome! You might end up with four panels which are not exactly the same length, but you can always add on to them, maybe a stockinette section with duplicate stitch showing the year?

joyousday wrote:So I'm waiting for more yarn to arrive. I am still going to use the linen stitch but am using Shandeh's idea. I am going to add more stitches and make a wrap. That way it can be more versatile for my sister-n-law. :knit:

Sweet! Another "wrap"er! :)

Here's the Photo Tutorial I made. Hope it helps!

I have decided to do my birth year for my temperature scarf. While I am waiting for the yarn to arrive I looked up the temperatures and recorded them. Then I made a chart of which colours I would do. I basically have the whole pattern laid out in an excel file so I can get started when the yarn gets here. It looks like it is going to be a very pretty scarf. Can't wait to get started. :D

Here is the second start of my 2012 calendar afghan--Jan 1 - 5. These are about 3 inches. I am doing a black border around the entire afghan and assembling as I go. My temp is divided in 5 degree increments. Low = middle, Average = next, High on outside. (This way I shouldn't have any block entirely one color.)

What did I do with the eight huge blocks? I gave them to my daughter who is considering making the strip into a purse.

Here are my temps broken down with color. I decided to just use 6 colors in my scarf so it isn't quite so busy. I think I will be knitting in the round as well so I need to find a fun stitch that will stand out. I am doing the 38 weeks I was pregnant with my son last year. :)

<40 Dark Blue
41-52 Med Blue
53-65 Light Blue
66-74 Pink
75-83 Mauve
>84 Burgundy
