Yarn and Colors for Your Temperature Scarf!

During our current KAL/CAL, you'll be working on a scarf a little bit every day for the whole year. At the end, look back and see how the weather has changed!

I ordered two different greens, and I'm glad I did because I prefer the Bernat Satin "Foliage" to my original choice of the Red Heart Soft green. But they were out of Crimson, so I have RH Soft Really Red, and I'm using their "Grape" instead of the Satin in "Sultana". Also, I'm doing the edging in "Ebony". I have mostly black winter coats, so I think it will work.

Oh, those colors will be beautiful with a black border! Almost like a stained glass window! :inlove:

I decided to go with shades of blue and purple. I really wanted more purple than blue, without ordering online I could only find 3 shades of purple that coordinated with 5 shades of blue. I already had a few of the colors in my stash, so I only had to buy 6 more colors. It took me forever to decide on my colors, I just got the last color I needed tonight. I decided to use grey as my border/separator color. So far this year we've had 7 of the 8 colors in the temperature range. I live in So. California, so we've had temps up to 86 and down to 57. I plan to crochet my scarf. Later I want to create a blanket using the temperature the year I was born.
My color range is:
Under 60: dk country blue
60-65: country blue
66-70: berry blue
71-75: lt country blue
76-80: soft blue
81-85: plum perfect
86-90: grape
Over 90: orchid

My yarn just showed up today, so I'm excited to get started. I chose a fingering weight yarn to try and keep the scarf manageable in length and also wearable in all but the hottest of temps.

The temperature range is pretty varied where we are (and I have no stash at all), so I chose 13 colours, plus a border. The first colour shown is the border, a light grey. The kind of washed out colour part way through is actually a really soft green. I originally had the colours in a different order, but once they showed up, I had to adjust them.

The ranges (Celsius) I'm using are:
32+ Bright Pink
28-31 Medium Pink
24-27 Deep Red
20-23 Tomato Red
14-19 Canary Yellow
11-14 Green
7-10 Light Green
3-6 Soft Green
-2 - 2 Light Teal
-6 - -3 Light Blue
-10 - -7 Dark Teal
-14 - -11 Royal Blue
-15+ Navy

I think I'm going to stick with garter stitch for this one, to keep it simple. I only recently re-started knitting, after having learned when I was a child. I'm going to knit all of 2013, and already will be using more than half of the colours.

I live in Maryland and I'm using the temperature range and colors as follows:

29 and below Lapis
30-39 Cobalt
40-49 Denim mist
50-59 Sultana
60-69 Foliage
70-79 Goldenrod
80-89 Tangerine
90 and above Sunshine

These are colors I had on hand. I don''t think they make Sunshine any more. Rather than crocheting everyday on this project, I using an average high and low temperature for the month. The low color is in the center and the high is on the outside. The border color is Snow. I will use it to join the rectangles.

Hey, I'm trying to understand how folks are doing their colors because I am not happy with how mine is turning out. What do you mean the low is in the center? :helpme:

Temp Scarf Square.JPG
To Tiny Terror,
I thought I uploaded a picture of the square I made. I will post it again. I have a spreadsheet that I enter the temperature in for each day. It calculates the average high and low. I use 2 rows for each temp. The outside border is my joining color.

I use Numbers, which is Apple's spreadsheet software. It's perfect for my needs with knitting and crocheting, and then it's portable, too!

Have fun!

I'm using 9 shades of Vickie Howell's Sheep(ish). I really like the colours and the way they are turning out.

I didn't get my yarn in time to start in February, so I started March 1st. I chose Vickie Howell's Sheep(ish). Following the Bernat Satin colors as close as I could I came up with: Plum(ish), Teal(ish), Turquoise(ish), Robin Egg(ish), Olive(ish), Chartreuse(ish), Lime(ish), Coral(ish), and Red(ish). My son went out to dinner with us last night and was looking at what I was doing. I told him it was going to be a Dr. Who kind of scarf. He was looking at the temperature gauge and said, "You can tell this was written for northern knitters." Duh me. I hadn't been to the forum yet, and I really hadn't taken much notice. I had already chosen the Plum(ish) for my borders and in -between months knowing that the chance of actually using them would be pretty much nil. Now I saw that I would have a red scarf for at least 2 maybe 3 Months, I live in the D/FW area of Texas. so this morning I got on line and ordered Yellow(ish). I haven't figured out my temperature scale yet, but I hope my yarn comes soon, as it is warming up out there. I am really enjoying myself. I did make my scarf 45 stitches across instead of 35 as I like wide scarfs. Thank you Bernat for sponcering this.

Kaleigh wrote:After receiving my shades and doing the first half of January (... I got impatient) I decided that the original color scheme had too much contrast. Luckily all I needed to do was switch around a couple of the shades! And rip back 15 days' of knitting, but we won't talk about that.

Here's my new scheme! Aqua, Lagoon, and Sage used to be Sage, Aqua, Lagoon. Since I'm going blue-teal-green, it turns out I had some teals before some blues.

Oh, Kaleigh, that is a good choice. I love it. :inlove: I need to take a picture of my colour scheme.
