This will also be my first ever CAL. I learned to crochet in primary school, but I haven't crocheted since then unil about a year ago.
Over here in Austria, there is no Bernat yarn, so I'm using a microfiber yarn which is available here and which has colous that are quite similar to the ones of the suggested Bernat yarns.
I'm very much looking forward to starting with the CAL, but I'll be busy in the meantime finishing some other blanket I've been working on recently.

What worries me though is that the Reference notes say that we will be doing several sections and then joining them. You all do NOT know how much I absolutely HATE joining (sigh). I might just do all the sections and stare at them for a year before I join them...

I'm not a fan of joining either. One of the last afghans I made for my daughter I joined while I was still crocheting. Join as you go is the term, I believe. :)

Of course this is easier if you have all the clues and you know how you're going to lay it out...

Maybe you could make your blanket with all neutral colors? That would make a nice contrast in the room.

The plum is very necessary to the room because of the brightness of an accent color. Is a different brand of yarn acceptable?

My friend, you can use any yarn you want. It's YOUR blanket.

I would think that any similar weight yarn will work well for this project.

Bernat made a video for us! :bravo:

This video shows how to work in the ends of your yarn as you work in crochet.

Re: First Timer and amount of yarn question

OhioAunt wrote:In the color tutorial it says for the CAL that you will end up with about 60% of the afghan in main color and Contrast D (30% each), and only 11% each in contrast A, B, and C. Is that right? If so then everybody will probably need 800-1000 yards of Contrast D, not just the 400 yards (2 balls) recommended.

I'll confess - I did the math for the percentages, and I'm not very good at number-crunching!

A big amount of Contrast D is not found in the blanket, it's an accent shade. There are a lot of small areas of D (a lot, I swear!), but no large focal point. Sorry if the bar was misleading :(
Temperature Scarf KAL: Bernat Satin, corrugated ribbing.

I have only learned to crochet just over a year ago and am intrigued by this idea. I hope the skill level is not beyond my ability, but am going to give it a go anyway. So far my only completed projects have been dish cloths and scarves, so I am looking forward to trying something bigger and better.

New to the group..

Postby Creative1 » Mon Jan 09, 2012 9:48 pm

Hi.. This looks like a fun place to be.. I'll give the project a shot and see how it comes out. Maybe being part of a group will encourage me to complete the blanket within a reasonable time. Now to pick out colors..That should be fun!
