Using differnt yarn for the KAL/CAL

Postby bemay » Tue Jan 17, 2012 5:44 pm

I plan to use the Canadiana Paton yarn for the kit a long. I was wondering since this yarn is 20 sts & 26 rows = 4 inches. Will it make a difference's compared to the Bernat Waverly yarn? How will it affect my afghan? Will I need more yarn than the 205 yards per skeins? Thank you for any advice you can help me with!

I would try a gauge swatch with the needle/hook size recommended and see how well you match up using Canadiana. I use Canadiana quite a bit and was thinking of using some from my stash (or possibly some Bernat SuperValue or similar worsted weight yarn). I don't often knit/crochet at the same gauge referred to on patterns/yarns so I usually have to check this even if using the recommended yarn/kneedle/hook.

Stash yarn

I hope this is really alright. I hate not buying from Bernat, but I'm retired, and have a yarn stash, and would rather use what I have for this mystery afghan. I have enough brown & blue tweed, and picked grey, white, tan, and blue for the other colors. Would they be too put out?

Nope, not a problem at all. Welcome to the fun.

I am also looking at using yarn from my stash to try one or both the KAL and CAL. I have a lot Bernat in my stash, especially Bernat Satin and Bernat Softee Chunky. Would one be better than the other to meet the recommended gauge for these projects? I tend to knit close to published gauge and crotchet gauge can vary for me, though it's usually close to published gauge too. If I have to choose between KAL and CAL, I will do the KAL. I did the Mystery CAL last year.

Bernat Softee Chunky is a bulky yarn, so it will be too thick for these blankets. Bernat Satin will work to a similar gauge as Waverly, but is a silkier texture.

Awesome, I just pulled out all of my Bernat Satin Yarn and found that I have all of the yarn I need for the KAL. I can't wait get started. This will be a nice break from spinning my own yarn. Thank you for the information.

Gauge is not that important in an afghap. Just make sure all your squares are oretty close to the same size. During the last CAL my squares were about 1/4 to 1/2 an inch smaller than what other people were getting and my final afghan came out just great. If the squares hadn't been about the same size, then it wouldn't wash up and stay the same size without bubbles and tight spots.

If you are using a different yarn, use the size needles or hook required for the yarn and just realize that your guage may be different, so your final squares may be a different size from what is posted on the patterns.
