MEASUREMENTS
To fit child 2/4 yrs (6/8 yrs).

MATERIALS
Bernat Softee Chunky (100 g/3.5 oz)
1 ball of (39712 Hot Lime) or (39416 Hot Pink) or (39622 True Yellow) as A
and 1 ball of (39742 Hot Blue) or (39330 Too Purple) or (39628 Hot Orange) as B.

Size 6.5 mm (U.S. K or 10½) crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge.

GAUGE
11 sc and 13 rows = 4 ins [10 cm].

INSTRUCTIONS
The instructions are written for smaller size. If changes are necessary for larger size the instructions will be written thus ( ).

With A, ch 2.
1st rnd: (RS). 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Join B with sl st to first sc.
2nd rnd: With B, ch 1. 2 sc in each sc around. Join A with sl st to first sc. 12 sc.
3rd rnd: With A, ch 1. *1 sc in next sc. 2 sc in next sc. Rep from * around. Join B with sl st to first sc. 18 sc.
4th rnd: With B, ch 1. *1 sc in each of next 2 sc. 2 sc in next sc. Rep from * around. Join A with sl st to first sc. 24 sc.
5th rnd: With A, ch 1. *1 sc in each of next 3 sc. 2 sc in next sc. Rep from * around. Join B with sl st to first sc. 30 sc.
6th rnd: With B, ch 1. *1 sc in each of next 4 sc. 2 sc in next sc. Rep from * around. Join A with sl st to first sc. 36 sc.
Last 2 rnds form Stripe Pat.

Keeping cont of Stripe Pat as established, inc 6 sts evenly on next and every following alt rnd to 48 (54) sc. Place marker at end of last rnd.

Size 2/4 only: Next rnd: Ch 1. *1 sc in each of next 11 sc. 2 sc in next sc. Rep from * around. Join with sl st to first sc. 52 sc.

All sizes: Next rnd: Ch 1. 1 sc in each sc around. Join with sl st to first sc.

Keeping cont of Stripe Pat, rep last rnd until work from marked rnd measures 4 (4½) ins [10 (11.5) cm], ending with a rnd of A. Do not join B at end of last rnd.

First Earflap: **1st row: With A, ch 1. 1 sc in each of next 10 (11) sc. Turn. Leave rem sts unworked.
Next 6 (8) rows: Ch 1. 1 sc in each of next 10 (11) sc. Turn.

Next 4 rows: Ch 1. Draw up a loop in each of next 2 sc. Yoh and draw through all loops on hook – Sc2tog made. 1 sc in each sc to last 2 sc. Sc2tog over last 2 sc. Turn. 2 (3) sc**.

Second Earflap: With RS of work facing, miss next 22 sc on lower edge of Cap (center front). Join A with sl st in next sc.
Work from ** to ** as given for First Earflap.

Edging: With RS of work facing, join B with sl st to lower edge of Cap at center back. Working from left to right instead of right to left as usual, work 1 rnd of reverse sc evenly around edge of Cap and Earflaps. Join with sl st to first reverse sc. Fasten off.

Twisted cord: Cut 2 strands of B, 12 ins [30.5 cm] long. With both strands tog hold one end and with someone holding other end, twist strands to the right until they begin to curl. Fold the 2 ends tog and tie in a knot so they will not unravel. The strands will now twist themselves together. Adjust length if desired.

Tassel: Cut a piece of cardboard 4 ins [10 cm] wide. Wind A and B tog around cardboard 15 times. Break yarn leaving a long end and thread end through a needle. Slip needle through all loops and tie tightly. Remove cardboard and wind yarn tightly around loops ¾ inch [2 cm] below fold. Fasten securely. Cut through rem loops and trim ends evenly. Sew Tassel to Twisted cord. Attach Twisted cord to top of Hat.
