Satin Sport - Hairy Hats (knit)

These funny hats will delight little boys and girls with their whimsical "hair". Two sizes fit 2-8 years. Made with Bernat Satin Sport. 3.25 mm (U.S. 3) and 4 mm (U.S. 6) knitting needles.

To fit child 2-4 (6-8) yrs.

MATERIALS
Bernat Satin Sport (85 g/3 oz)

GIRL'S VERSION
MC: #03705 (Red) 1 ball
A: #03011 (Taupe) 1 ball

or BOY'S VERSION
MC: #03141 (Clear Sky) 1 ball
A: #03010 (Beige) 1 ball

Sizes 3.25 mm (U.S. 3) and 4 mm (U.S. 6) knitting needles or size needed to obtain gauge.

GAUGE: 22 sts and 28 rows = 4 ins [10 cm] with larger needles in stocking st.

INSTRUCTIONS
The instructions are written for smaller size. If changes are necessary for larger size the instructions will be written thus ( ).

With MC and smaller needles, cast on 103 (115) sts. Work 8 rows in stocking st.
Next row: (RS). K1. *P1. K1. Rep from * to end of row.
Next row: P1. *K1. P1. Rep from * to end of row.
Rep last 2 rows of (K1. P1) ribbing twice more.
Change to larger needles and proceed in stocking st until work from beg of ribbing measures 3½ (4) ins [9 (10) cm], ending with a WS row and dec 1 st at center of last row. 102 (114) sts.

Shape top: 1st row: (RS). *K2. Sl1. K1. psso. K19 (22). K2tog. Rep from * to last 2 sts. K2. 94 (106) sts.
2nd and alt rows: Purl.
3rd row: *K2. Sl1. K1. psso. K17 (20). K2tog. Rep from * to last 2 sts. K2. 86 (98) sts.
5th row: *K2. Sl1. K1. psso. K15 (18). K2tog. Rep from * to last 2 sts. K2. 78 (90) sts.
Cont in this manner, dec 8 sts on next and every following alt row to 22 (18) sts.

Size 2-4 only: Next row: *K2. Sl1. K2tog. psso. Rep from * to last 2 sts. K2. 14 sts.

Break yarn, leaving a long end. Thread end through rem sts. Fasten securely. Sew back seam, reversing seam below ribbing for rolled edge.

FINISHING
Girl’s Version only: Cut 120 strands of A 30 ins [76 cm] long. Tie strands tog at center and sew to top of Hat. Tie strands tog 4 ins [10 cm] from center on each side and tack to Hat. Trim approx 20 strands to 4 ins [10 cm] at center front for bangs. Braid long strands and tie with A as shown in picture. Trim ends evenly.

Boy’s Version only: Cut 200 strands of A 5 ins [12.5 cm] long. Taking 2 strands tog, knot into fringe around crown of Hat as shown in picture.
