Size 6.5 mm (U.S. 10½) circular knitting needle 24 ins [60 cm] long for Capelet. Size 6.5 mm (U.S. 10½) knitting needles or size needed to obtain gauge. Stuffing for Hat.
Capelet: (Optional) 2 buttons for Buttonhole Version or Brooch for Brooch Version.

GAUGE
12 sts and 14 rows = 4 ins [10 cm] in stocking st with 2 strands of yarn.

The instructions are written for smallest size. If changes are necessary for larger sizes the instructions will be written thus ( ).

Capelet
MAIN BODY
With circular needle and 2 strands of MC, cast on 124 (136-148-160-172) sts. Do not join.Working back and forth across needle in rows, proceed as follows:
Work 2 rows stocking st.
Inc 1 st each end of needle on next and following alt rows 3 times more. 132 (144-156-168-180) sts.
Purl 1 row.
Next row: K10 (7-9-6-5). *K2tog. K14 (14-13-12- 12). Rep from * to last 10 (9-12-8-7) sts. K2tog. K8 (7-10-6-5). 124 (135-146-156-167) sts.
Work 3 rows even.
Next row: K10 (7-9-6-5). *K2tog. K13 (13-12-11- 11). Rep from * to last 9 (8-11-7-6) sts. K2tog. K7 (6-9-5-4). 116 (126-136-144-154) sts.
Work 3 rows even.
Next row: K9 (6-8-5-4). *K2tog. K12 (12-11-10- 10). Rep from * to last 9 (8-11-7-6) sts. K2tog. K7 (6-9-5-4). 108 (117-126-132-141) sts.
Work 3 rows even.
Next row: K9 (6-8-5-4). *K2tog. K11 (11-10-9-9).

Work 3 rows even.
Next row: K7 (4-6-3-2). *K2tog. K8 (8-7-6-6).
Rep from * to last 7 (6-9-5-4) sts. K2tog. K5 (4-7- 3-2). 76 (81-86-84-89) sts.
Cast off.

Neckband: With pair of needles and 2 strands of A, cast on 11 sts.
1st row: (RS). Purl.
2nd row: Knit.

Buttonhole Version Only: Next row: P2. Cast off 2 sts. P2 (including st on needle after cast off ). Cast off 2 sts. P3.
Next row: Knit, casting on 2 sts over cast off sts.
Work 2 rows even.

Brooch Version: Work a further 4 rows in reverse stocking st.

Both Versions: Place a marker at end of last row.

Shape curve: 1st row: (WS). K9. Turn.
2nd row: Purl.
3rd row: K7. Turn.
4th row: Purl.
5th row: Knit across all sts.
6th row: Purl.
Rep last 6 rows until work across longer edge measures approx 26 (27-28-28-29½) ins [66 (68.5- 71-71-75) cm], ending on a 6th row. Place a marker at end of last row.
Work a further 6 rows in reverse stocking st. Cast off knitwise (WS).

FINISHING
Sew long edge of Neckband between markers to top edge of Main Body. Optional: Sew buttons on neckband to correspond to buttonholes.

Hat
MAIN BODY

With pair of needles and 2 strands of A, cast on 59 sts loosely.
Work 5½ ins [14 cm] in stocking st, ending with a purl row.
Change to MC and cont in stocking st until work from beg measures 9½ ins [24 cm], ending with a purl row. Cast off loosely.

TOP
With 2 strands of MC, cast on 11 sts.
Work 2 rows stocking st.
Inc 1 st each end of needle on next and following alt rows until there are 25 sts.
Work 7 rows even.
Dec 1 st each end of needle on next and following alt rows until there are 11 sts.
Purl 1 row. Cast off (back).

FINISHING
Sew center back seam of Main Body, reversing seam for turnback of Contrast A section. Pin Top to Main Body matching center back of Top to seam.
Sew Top seam.Make a tube of stuffing approx 2 ins [5 cm] wide and 19 ins [48 cm] long. Turn up Contrast A section around stuffing and sew in position, taking care not to over-stuff.
