Set of four size 4.5 mm (U.S. 7) double-pointed knitting needles or size needed to obtain gauge.

GAUGE
19 sts and 25 rows = 4 ins [10 cm] in stocking st.

INSTRUCTIONS
The instructions are written for smallest size. If changes are necessary for larger sizes the instructions will be written thus ( ).
With A, cast on 24 (24-26-26) sts loosely. Divide sts into 8 sts on 1st needle, 8 (8-9-9) sts on 2nd needle and 3rd needles. Join in rnd, placing a marker on first st.
1st rnd: *K1. P1. Rep from * around.
Rep last rnd once more.
With MC, rep last rnd twice more.
Last 4 rnds form Stripe Pat.
Keeping cont of pat, rep last rnd until work from beg measures 4 (4-4¼-4½) ins [10 (10-11-11.5) cm].
Rearrange sts as follows: Slip last 2 sts from 1st needle onto 2nd needle. Slip first 2 sts from end of 3rd needle onto 2nd needle. Sts are divided as 6 sts on 1st needle, 12 (12-13-13) sts on 2nd needle and 6 (6-7-7) sts on 3rd needle.
Make heel: Divide 12 (12-13-13) sts from 2nd needle onto 2 needles and leave for instep. Knit 6 sts from 1st needle onto 3rd needle. 12 (12-13- 13) sts for heel.
Next row: (WS). With A, Sl1P. P4 (4-8-8). (P2tog) 1 (1-0-0) time. P5. 11 (11-13-13) sts.
Next row: *K1. Sl1. Rep from * to last st. K1.
Next row: Purl.
With A, rep last 2 rows until heel measures 1½ ins [4 cm], ending with a RS row.
Shape heel: 1st row: Sl1P. P5 (5-6-6). P2tog. P1. Turn.
2nd row: Sl1P. K2. Sl1K. K1. psso. K1. Turn.
3rd row: Sl1P. P2. P2tog. P1. Turn.
Rep last 2 rows 1 (1-2-2) time(s) more, then 2nd row once. 5 sts.

Sizes 6 and 12 mos only:
Next row: P2. P2tog. P1. 4 sts.

Shape instep: With RS of work facing and 1st needle, pick up and knit 8 sts along left side of heel. With 2nd needle, K12 (12-13-13) for instep. With 3rd needle, pick up and knit 8 sts along right side of heel. Knit first 2 (2-3-3) sts from heel onto end of 3rd needle. Slip rem 2 sts from heel onto beg of 1st needle. 32 (32-34-34) sts are now divided as 10 sts on 1st needle, 12 (12-13-13) sts on 2nd needle and 10 (10-11-11) sts on 3rd needle.
1st rnd: 1st needle: Knit to last 3 sts. K2tog. K1.
2nd needle: Knit. 3rd needle: K1. Sl1. K1. psso. Knit to end of needle.
2nd rnd: Knit.
Rep last 2 rnds until there are 24 (24-26-26) sts divided as 6 sts on 1st needle, 12 (12-13-13) sts on 2nd needle and 6 (6-7-7) sts on 3rd needle.
Cont even until foot from picked up sts at heel measures 2¼ (2½-2¾-3) ins [5.5 (6-7-7.5) cm].

Shape toe: 1st rnd: 1st needle: Knit to last 3 sts. K2tog. K1.
2nd needle: K1. Sl1. K1. psso. Knit to last 3 sts. K2tog. K1.
3rd needle: K1. Sl1. K1. psso. Knit to end of needle.
