Bernat® Softee Baby (140 g/5 oz)
Main Color (MC)(Pink) 1 ball
Contrast A (White) 1 ball

Size 5 mm (U.S. H or 8) crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge. 5 buttons.

GAUGE
16 sts and 14 rows = 4 ins [10 cm] in Openwork Stripe Pat.

ABBREVIATIONS
Beg = Beginning.
Ch = Chain.
Cont = Continue.
Dc = Double crochet.
Inc = Increase(d).
Pat = Pattern.
Hdc = Half double crochet.
Rem = Remaining.
Rep = Repeat.
RS = Right side.
Sl st = Slip stitch.
Sp(s) = Space(s).
Sc = Single crochet.
St(s) = Stitch(es).
Sc2tog = (Draw up a loop in next st) twice. Yoh and draw through all loops on hook.
Hdc2tog = (Yoh and draw up a loop in next st) twice. Yoh and draw through all loops on hook.

INSTRUCTIONS
The instructions are written for smaller size. If changes are necessary for larger size the instructions will be written thus ( ).
Note: To change color, work to last 2 loops on hook of last st, then draw a new color through rem 2 loops and proceed.
Ch 2 does not count as hdc.

BODY (worked in one piece to armholes)
With A, ch 74 (82).
1st row: (RS). 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook. 1 sc in each ch to end of ch. Turn. 73 (81) sts.
2nd row: Ch 1. 1 sc in each sc to end of row. Join MC. Turn.
3rd row:With MC, ch 2. 1 hdc in first sc. *Ch 1. Miss next sc. 1 hdc in next sc. Rep from * across. Join A. Turn.
4th row: With A, ch 1. *2 sc in next ch-1 sp. Rep from * to last hdc. 1 sc in last hdc. Turn.
5th to 7th rows: As 2nd to 4th rows.
Rep 2nd to 7th rows for Openwork Stripe Pat until work from beg measures approx 6¼ ins [16 cm], ending on a 4th row of pat.
Divide for armholes: Right Front: Next row: (RS). With A, ch 1. 1 sc in each of first 17 (19) sts. Join MC. Turn. Leave rem sts unworked.
Cont even in pat for 7 (9) more rows, ending with RS facing for next row.
Shape neck: Next row: Sl st in each of first 3 (4) sts (neck edge). Ch 1 (2). Pat to end of row. Turn.
Next row: Pat to last 2 sts. Sc2tog or Hdc2tog over last 2 sts. Turn.
Next row: Ch 1. Sc2tog over first 2 sts. Pat to end of row. Turn.
Rep last 2 rows once more. 10 (11) sts. Work 1 row even in pat. Fasten off.

BACK
With RS of work facing, miss next st, join appropriate color with sl st to next st. Ch 1. 1 sc in same sp. 1 sc in each of next 36 (40) sts. Turn. Leave rem sts unworked. 37 (41) sts.
Cont even in pat for 13 (15) more rows, ending with RS facing for next row. Fasten off.

LEFT FRONT
With RS of work facing, miss next sc, join appropriate color with sl st to next st. Ch 1. 1 sc in same sp. 1 sc in each of next 16 (18) sts. Turn.
Cont even in pat for 7 (9) more rows, ending with RS facing for next row.
Shape neck: Next row: Ch 1. Pat to last 3 (4) sts. Turn. Leave rem sts unworked.
Next row: Sc2tog or Hdc2tog over first 2 sts. Pat to end of row. Turn.
Next row: Pat to last 2 sts. Sc2tog or Hdc2tog over last 2 sts. Turn.
Rep last 2 rows once more. 10 (11) sts.
Work 1 row even in pat. Fasten off.

SLEEVES
With MC, ch 26 (30).
1st row: (RS). 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook. 1 sc in each ch to end of ch. Turn. 25 (29) sts.
Beg on a 2nd row, work in Openwork
Stripe Pat as given for Body, shaping sides by working 2 sts at beg and end of 7th and following 6th rows until there are 31 (35) sts, taking inc sts into pat.
Cont even in pat until Sleeve measures 6 (7½) ins [15 (19) cm], ending with RS facing for next row. Fasten off.

FINISHING
Lower Edging: 1st row:With RS of Body facing, join MC with sl st in rem loop of foundation ch at corner of Left Front. Ch 3 (counts as dc). Miss next ch. [(1 dc. Ch 1) 3 times. 1 dc - shell made] all in next ch. *Miss next 3 ch. Shell in next ch. Rep from * across to last 2 ch. Miss next ch. 1 dc in last ch. Turn.
2nd row: Ch 3 (counts as dc). *Shell in center ch-1 sp of next shell. Rep from * across. 1 dc in top of turning ch. Turn.
3rd row: Ch 3 (counts as dc). *(1 dc. Ch 1. 1 dc. Ch 3. Sl st in 3rd ch from hook - picot made. 1 dc. Ch 1. 1 dc) all in center ch-1 sp of next shell. Rep from * across. 1 dc in top of turning ch. Fasten off.
Sew shoulder seams.
Collar: 1st row:With WS of Body facing, join MC with sl st at corner of Left Front neck edge. Work 36 (40) sc evenly around neck edge to opposite corner. Turn.
2nd row: Ch 3 (counts as dc). Miss next sc. Shell in next sc. *Miss next 3 sc. Shell in next sc. Rep from * across to last 2 sc. Miss next sc. 1 dc in last sc. Turn.
3rd row: Ch 3 (counts as dc). *Shell in center ch-1 sp of next shell. Rep from * across. 1 dc in top of turning ch. Turn.
4th row: Ch 3 (counts as dc). *(1 dc. Ch 1. 1 dc. Picot. 1 dc. Ch 1. 1 dc) all in center ch-1 sp of next shell. Rep from * across. 1 dc in top of turning ch. Fasten off.

Buttonhole Band
1st row:With RS of Body facing, join MC with sl st at bottom corner of Right Front (excluding edging). Ch 1. Work 42 (46) sc evenly up Right Front to neck edge. Turn.
2nd row: Ch 1. 1 sc in each of first 2 sc. *Ch 2. Miss next 2 sc. 1 sc in each of next 7 (8) sc. Rep from * 3 times. Ch 2. Miss next 2 sc. 1 sc in each of last 2 sc. Turn.
3rd row: Ch 1. 1 sc in each of first 2 sc. *2 sc in next ch-2 sp. 1 sc in each of next 7 (8) sc. Rep from * 3 times. 2 sc in next ch-2 sp. 1 sc in each of last 2 sc. Fasten off.

Button Band
Work as given for Buttonhole Band along Left Front edge, omitting all reference to buttonholes.
Sleeve Edging: 1st row: With RS of Sleeve facing, join MC with sl st in first loop of foundation ch. Ch 3 (counts as dc). Miss next ch. Shell in next ch. *Miss next 3 ch. Shell in next ch. Rep from * across to last 2 ch. Miss next ch. 1 dc in last ch. Fasten off. Sew in sleeves. Sew side and sleeve seams. Sew buttons to correspond to buttonholes.
