4 (6-8) balls

Size 10 mm (U.S. 15) circular knitting needles 24 ins [60 cm] long and 16 ins [40 cm] long or size needed to obtain gauge.

GAUGE
11 sts and 11 rows = 4 ins [10 cm] in pat.

K = Knit.
Pat = Pattern.
K2tog = Knit 2 stitches together.
Psso = Pass slipped stitch over.
Rep = Repeat.

INSTRUCTIONS
The instructions are written for smallest size. If changes are necessary for larger sizes the instructions will be written thus ( ).
With longer needle, cast on 144 (160- 176) sts. Join in rnd, placing a marker on first st.
1st and 2nd rnds: Knit.
3rd rnd: *K2tog. (yfwd) twice (counts as 2 sts). Sl1. K1. psso. Rep from * around.
4th rnd: *K1. Knit into first yfwd.
Knit into back loop of next yfwd. K1.
Rep from * to end of rnd.
Rep last 4 rnds for pat until work from beg measures approx 10½ (11-12) ins [26.5 (28-30.5) cm], ending with a 4th rnd of pat.
Shape top: Next rnd: *K7 (8-9). K2tog. Rep from * around. 128 (144- 160) sts.
Work 3 rnds even in pat.
Next rnd: *K6 (7-8). K2tog. Rep from * around. 112 (128-144) sts.
Work 3 rnds even in pat.
Next rnd: *K5 (6-7). K2tog. Rep from * around. 96 (112-128) sts.
Work 3 rnds even in pat.
Next rnd: *K4 (5-6). K2tog. Rep from * around. 80 (96-112) sts.
Change to shorter needle.
