INSTRUCTIONS
The instructions are written for smallest size. If changes are necessary for larger sizes the instructions will be written thus ( ). When only one number is given, it applies to all sizes. For ease in working, circle all numbers pertaining to your size.
Stripe Pat
With MC, work 4 rows in stocking st.
With A, work 2 rows in stocking st.
With MC, knit 1 row.
With B, work 2 rows in stocking st.
With MC, purl 1 row.
With A, work 2 rows in stocking st.
These 12 rows form Stripe Pat.

HAT
With A and smaller needles, cast on 81 (87) sts.
1st row: (RS). K1. *P1. K1. Rep from * to end of row.
2nd row: P1. *K1. P1. Rep from * to end of row.
Rep last 2 rows of (K1. P1) ribbing for 3 ins [7.5 cm], ending with a 2nd row and inc 1 st at center of last row. 82 (88) sts.
Change to larger needles and proceed in Stripe Pat until work from beg measures 8½ (9½) ins [21.5 (24) cm], ending with a purl row.
Keeping cont of Stripe Pat, shape Hat as follows:
First Long Section: Next row: (RS). Cast off 3 (4) sts. K35 (36). Turn.
Leave rem sts on a spare needle.
**Dec 1 st at each end of needle on 2nd and every following alt row 2 (3) times more, then on every following 4th row to 11 (12) sts.
Work 7 rows even.
Dec 1 st at each end of next and every following 8th row to 5 (6) sts.
Work 7 rows even.
Break yarn and thread through rem sts. Draw up tightly and fasten securely.**
Second Long Section: With RS of work facing, join appropriate color to rem sts. Cast off center 6 (8) sts. Knit to end of row.
Next row: Cast off 3 (4) sts. Purl to end of row. 35 (36) sts.
Work from ** to ** as given for First Long Section.
Sew back seam. Sew Long Sections seams. Fold hat flat and sew top seam between Long Sections.

FINISHING
Pom-pom: (make 2).
Wind A around 3 fingers approx 60 times. Remove from fingers and tie tightly in center. Cut through each side of loops. Trim to a smooth round shape.

MITTENS
RIGHT MITTEN
**Cuff:With MC and double-pointed needles, cast on 28 (32) sts. Divide sts onto 3 needles as follows: 9 (11) sts on 1st and 2nd needles. 10 sts on 3rd needle. Join in rnd. Place marker on first st.
Work 16 (20) rnds in (K1. P1) ribbing.
Proceed in Stripe Pat for 4 (6) rnds.**
Cont in Stripe Pat, proceed as follows:
Shape thumb: 1st rnd: K14 (17). Inc 1 st in each of next 2 sts. Knit to end of rnd.
2nd and alt rnds: Knit.

Knit in rnds for 1¼ (1¾) ins [3 (4.5) cm].
