Size 5 mm (U.S. H or 8) crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge. White felt for eyes. Stuffing for Devil Hat horns.

INSTRUCTIONS

Both Versions:
Note: Ch 2 does not count as st at beg of rnd.
With MC, ch 4. Join with sl st to form a ring.
1st rnd: Ch 2. 8 hdc in ring. Join with sl st to first hdc.
2nd rnd: Ch 2. 2 hdc in each hdc around. Join with sl st to first hdc. 16 hdc.
3rd rnd: Ch 2. *1 hdc in next sc. 2 hdc in next hdc. Rep from * around. Join with sl st to first hdc. 24 hdc.
4th rnd: Ch 2. *1 hdc in each of next 2 hdc. 2 hdc in next hdc. Rep from * around. Join with sl st to first hdc. 32 hdc.
5th rnd: Ch 2. *1 hdc in each of next 3 hdc. 2 hdc in next hdc. Rep from * around. Join with sl st to first hdc. 40 hdc.
6th rnd: Ch 2. *1 hdc in each of next 4 hdc. 2 hdc in next hdc. Rep from * around. Join with sl st to first hdc. 48 hdc.

Next rnd: Ch 2. 1 hdc in each hdc around. Join with sl st to first hdc.
Rep last rnd until work from marked rnd measures 4½ (5) ins [11 (12.5) cm].
Join A at end of last rnd.
With A, rep last rnd for 3 ins [7.5 cm]. Fasten off.

Bear Version
EARS (make 2).
Inner Ear: **With A, ch 2.
1st row: (RS). 4 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Turn.
2nd row: Ch 1. 2 sc in each of first 3 sc. 1 sc in last sc. Turn. 7 sc.
3rd row: Ch 1. (2 sc in next sc. 1 sc in next sc) 3 times. 2 sc in last sc. Turn. 11 sc.
4th row: Ch 1. (2 sc in next sc. 1 sc in each of next 2 sc) 3 times. 2 sc in next sc. 1 sc in last sc. Turn. 15 sc.
5th row: Ch 1. (2 sc in next sc. 1 sc in each of next 3 sc) 3 times. 2 sc in next sc. 1 sc in each of last 2 sc. 19 sc.** Fasten off.
Outer Ear: With MC, work from ** to ** as given for Inner Ear. Do not break MC.
With WS of Inner and Outer Ears tog, with MC work through both thicknesses as follows:
Next row: Ch 1. (2 sc in next sc. 1 sc in each of next 4 sc) 3 times. 2 sc in next sc. 1 sc in each of next 3 sc. Do not turn. 23 sc.
Next row: Ch 1. Working from left to right instead of from right to left as usual, work 1 reverse sc in each sc across. Fasten off.

FINISHING
Fold A section to RS for cuff.
Sew Ears to Hat.
With white felt, cut out eye circles 1¼ ins [3 cm] diameter. With A, embroider eyes over felt, using satin stitch. Embroider nose and snout as shown in photo.

Devil Version
Horns (make 2)
**With MC, ch 12. Join with sl st to first sc to form a ring.
1st rnd: Ch 1. 1 sc in each ch around. Join with sl st to first sc. 12 sc.
2nd rnd: Ch 1. 1 sc in each sc around. Join with sl st to first sc.**
Rep last rnd until work from beg measures 3 ins [7.5 cm].
Shape points: 1st rnd: Ch 1. *Draw up a loop in each of next 2 sc. Yoh and draw through all 3 loops on hook – sc2tog made. 1 sc in each of next 2 sc. Rep from * around. Join with sl st to first st. 9 sc.
2nd rnd: Ch 1. 1 sc in each st around. Join with sl st to first sc.
3rd rnd: Ch 1. (Sc2tog. 1 sc in next sc) 3 times. Join with sl st to first st. 6 sc.
4th rnd: As 2nd rnd.
5th rnd: Ch 1. (Sc2tog) 3 times. Join with sl st to first st. Fasten off, leaving a long end.
Thread yarn through rem sts. Pull tightly. Stuff Horns. Thread yarn down side of Horn. Pull slightly to form bend. Secure yarn.
Sew horns in position.

Tail
Work from ** to ** as given for Horns.
Rep last rnd until work from beg measures 12 ins [30.5 cm]. Fasten off.
Fringe: Cut 12 strands of MC 3 ins [7.5 cm] long. Taking 1 strand, knot into fringe around end of Tail. Trim fringe evenly.
Tie end of Tail into knot, leaving fringe free. Sew Tail to back of Hat.
With white felt cut out eyes 1¼ ins [3 cm] diameter. With MC, sew in position using Satin stitch.
