Set of 4 size 4.5 mm (U.S. 7) double-pointed needles or size needed to obtain gauge.

INSTRUCTIONS
With A, cast on 28 sts. Divide into (9, 9, 10) sts on 3 needles. Join in rnd, placing a marker on first st.
1st rnd: Purl.
Knit 8 rnds.
Next rnd: Purl. Push work to inside of needles to reverse for cuff turnback.
Join MC and knit in rnds until work from color change measures 5 ins [12.5 cm].
Arrange heel sts: Slip last 3 sts from 1st needle onto beg of 2nd needle.
Slip first 4 sts from 3rd needle onto end of 2nd needle. Sts are now divided as (6, 16, 6) sts. Slip 6 sts from 3rd needle onto 1st needle for heel. 12 heel sts. Divide rem 16 sts onto 2 needles and leave for instep.

Make heel: 1st row: (RS). Sl1. Knit.
2nd row: Sl1. Purl.
Rep last 2 rows for 1½ ins [4 cm], ending with a RS row.

Shape heel:
1st row: (WS). P6. P2tog. P1. Turn.
2nd row: K3. ssk. K1. Turn.
3rd row: P4. P2tog. P1. Turn.
4th row: K5. ssk. K1. Turn.
5th row: P4. (P2tog) twice. 6 sts.

Shape instep: With RS facing and 1st needle, pick up and knit 6 sts along left side of heel. With 2nd needle, K16 for instep. With 3rd needle, pick up and knit 6 sts along right side of heel, then knit fi rst 3 sts from heel onto end of 3rd needle. Slip rem 3 sts from heel onto beg of 1st needle. 34 sts are now divided as (9, 16, 9) sts.
1st rnd: 1st needle: Knit to last 3 sts. K2tog. K1. 2nd needle: K16. 3rd needle: K1. ssk. Knit.
2nd rnd: Knit.
Rep last 2 rnds until there are 24 sts (4, 16, 4) sts. Rearrange sts as follows:
Slip first 2 sts from 2nd needle onto end of 1st needle. Slip last 2 sts from 2nd needle onto beg of 3rd needle. Sts are now divided as (6, 12, 6) sts.
Cont even until foot from picked up sts at heel measures 2¼ ins [5.5 cm].

Shape toe: 1st rnd: 1st needle: Knit to last 3 sts. K2tog. K1. 2nd needle: K1. ssk. Knit to last 3 sts. K2tog. K1. 3rd needle: K1. ssk.
2nd rnd: Knit.
Rep last 2 rnds until there are 8 sts divided as (2, 4, 2) sts. Break yarn, leaving a long end. Draw end tightly through rem sts.
