18 sts and 24 rows = 4 ins [10 cm] in stocking st.

INSTRUCTIONS
Cast on 54 sts.
Knit 3 rows, noting 1st row is WS and inc 20 sts evenly across last row. 74 sts.
1st row: (RS). K1. *ssk. With left hand needle, pick up st just slipped and knit into back of it. Rep from * to last st. K1.
2nd row: *P2tog, then purl fi rst st again, slipping both sts off needle tog. Rep from * to end of row.
Rep last 2 rows for pat until work from beg measures 17½ ins [44.5 cm], ending with a WS row.
Next row: (RS). Knit, dec 20 sts evenly across. 54 sts.
Knit 2 rows. Cast off knitwise (WS).
Top and bottom edgings: With RS facing, pick up and knit 76 sts evenly across top edge. Knit 2 rows. Cast off knitwise (WS).
Rep for bottom edge.
