Set of 4 size 4.5 mm (U.S. 7) double pointed knitting needles or size needed to obtain gauge.

GAUGE
19 sts and 25 rows = 4" [10 cm] in stocking st.

INSTRUCTIONS
The instructions are written for Lady’s size. If changes are necessary for Man’s size the instructions will be written thus ( ). When only one number is given, it applies to both sizes.
Cast on 88 (92) sts. Divide sts evenly on 3 needles. Join in rnd, placing a marker on first st.
1st rnd: *K2. P2. Rep from * around.
Rep last rnd (K2. P2) ribbing 5 times more, inc 2 (3) sts evenly around last rnd. 90 (95) sts.
Proceed in Spiral Pat as follows:
1st rnd: *K2tog. M1. K3. Rep from * around.
2nd rnd: K1. P1. *K4. P1. Rep from * to last 3 sts. K2. Slip last st onto beg of first needle.
3rd rnd: K2tog (including st slipped from end of previous rnd). M1. K3. *K2tog. M1. K3. Rep from * around.
Rep 2nd and 3rd rnds for Spiral Pat until Hat measures 7 (7½)" [18 (19) cm] ending with a 2nd rnd.
Shape top: 1st rnd: K2tog (including st slipped from end of previous rnd). M1. K1. K2tog. *K2tog. M1. K1. K2tog. Rep from * around. 72 (76) sts.
2nd rnd: K1. P1. *K3. P1. Rep from * to last 2 sts. K1. Slip last st onto beg of first needle.
3rd rnd: K2tog (including st slipped from end of previous rnd). M1. K2. *K2tog. M1. K2. Rep from * around.
4th rnd: As 2nd rnd.
5th rnd: K2tog (including st slipped from end of previous rnd). M1. K2tog. *K2tog. M1. K2tog. Rep from * around. 54 (57) sts.
6th rnd: K1. P1. *K2. P1. Rep from * to last st. Slip last st onto beg of first needle.
7th rnd: K2tog (including st slipped from end of previous rnd). M1. K1. *K2tog. M1. K1. Rep from * around.
8th rnd: K1. P1. *K2. P1. Rep from * to last 3 sts. K1. Slip last 2 sts onto beg of first needle.
9th rnd: K3tog (including sts slipped from end of previous rnd). M1. *K3tog. M1. Rep from * around. 36 (38) sts.
